Over the past few years of my college career (and, lets be honest, in high school too), I have had my fair share of fashion mishaps. But I’ve lived and learned from them. This week, I’m helping you avoid fashion mishaps of your own by bringing you up to date on fashions for this fall. And if you’re a college student, read on – because these picks are tailored just for you!
Sweaters are never going out of style, that’s for sure, so they’ll always be a staple in my closet and they should be in yours too! They’re unbelievably easy to throw on with jeans, skirts, and even over dresses. So this fall why not step outside of the box and into something besides a boring cable knit sweater? (My jokes are so bad they’re almost good…)
A sweater with a punchy animal graphic brings edgy and cute together in a whole new way. I really can’t think of anything I’d like to wear more than a sweater with tiger or pug on it, can you?!
A sweater with studs or spikes is another way to be on trend (ugh, I hate that term). They’re unexpected and eye catching, too! If you’re a fan of DIY projects, an embellished sweater can be created using a thrift store sweater and just a few simple tools from a craft store (I found this one from Style and Pepper especially simple and helpful!).
Button down tops are also on my list of fall must haves. Chambray button downs have been extremely popular as of late, and they are easy to layer under sweaters, over dresses and with jeans.
Particularly, patterned button downs in floral or plaid in anything from deep colors to pops of bright colors are very easy to wear. Like sweaters, you can throw one on with a pair of jeans, flats and head out the door.
Patterned buttons downs also allow you to playfully mix and match other patterned pieces such as scarves, shoes or bracelets into your outfit.
When trekking to and from classes, meetings and study groups, comfortable shoes are a must. Your 3-inch brown booties might be cute but your biology lab is probably not the best place to show them off.
Rather, this fall it’s time to put your Chucks and Vans to good use. Shoes in colors like cranberry and navy are perfect for fall, and will match a surprising majority of what’s already residing in your closet – don’t be afraid to try out weird color combinations!
If you’re looking to dress up your outfit a bit or standout from the crowd without sacrificing comfort, brightly colored loafers or faux leather ankle boots (sans heel) are the way to go – studs and spikes are good here too!
As for staying warm when the temperature drops, it’s all about layering. Denim jackets and army green jackets are easy to pair with several color palettes and light enough layer over other long sleeve pieces. A faux leather jacket or a varsity jacket will make for a more put together look, and will easily carry you into the beginning of the winter months.
Now that you’ve got fall fashion tips, all you need is cool weather to start trying them out!
